Healing Patriots volunteers to help the kids at Camp Hometown Heroes enjoy a day on the lake!

Healing Patriots and their volunteers were invited to attend Camp with the children from Camp Hometown Heroes for a special day of fishing. The evening before the fishing outing, board members and pro-staff attended the Honor Ceremony in which the children spent time remembering their lost loved ones and placing a symbolic lighted candle in the water. Team members Scott Gennrich, Joe Parker, Brent Kozak, and Ed Garza were in attendance and Ed stated, “This was one of the most emotional events we personally experienced during our volunteering in working with military families, but we were honored to have been there to support the children in honoring their loved ones, and our heroes.

An emotional Joe Parker said, “After such a moving tribute and with a lot of tears shed that evening, we couldn’t wait for the next day to give these kids a great time on the water fishing.” With 20 boat captains volunteering their service to Healing Patriots and Camp Hometown Heroes, that is exactly what happened for the 90 kids who were at camp this year. The weather was picture perfect and within a three and a half hour period, every child had an opportunity to fish for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes with their boat captains. There were a lot of fish caught, but most importantly, there were a lot of smiles on the faces of the children.

Along with Healing Patriots and Camp Hometown Heroes staff and counselors, 8 Wisconsin DNR Wardens, and volunteers from Kohl’s Corporate helped with small group activities, going out with the children fishing, and assisting with lunch preparations. A special thank you goes out to one of our major program partners, Mr. Tony Resch, Owner of Raising the Steaks Fundraising & Leadership Development Company from Menominee Falls, WI. Tony was the lunch sponsor for this special day that fed over 200 people. According to Tony, “We all have to make a difference and I am glad to be a part of this special day.”
